I’m not going to say “I told you so…” people had high hopes for a Trump 2.0 administration. By now it’s clear that he is both breaking promises he made AND he is not as good at being president as he made us believe.
The question facing Americans now is what to do. I don’t think it’s helpful to review a litany of specific policy positions. I think Americans have wide differences on many issues. But Americans all want basically the same things.
Now that WE have seen Trump 2.0 in action, WE have been disappointed, and yes, sometimes WE have been disgusted by his real positions in contrast to his broken campaign promises. No need to list his broken promises because WE know that more betrayals of campaign promises are coming. WE know that more abuses ordinary Americans are coming. we know that more flip-flopping and more policy failures are coming. WE now know for sure that Trump is working for himself, not for us.
Lord knows America isn’t perfect. There is so much that needs fixed. However, Americans have run this country for 250 years by democratic means! In spite of our problems it has been, until recently, the best place in the world to live, work and raise a family.
What WE need to do now is return to our traditional politics. Elect people who will return to debate, compromise, and working incrementally for a more perfect union.
WE the people don’t need a king. We don’t need a fascist. We don’t need a dictator. And we certainly don’t need a foreign billionaire named Musk ripping away at our most helpful institutions.
What do we need is to elect serious representatives who will double down on American values and make sure everyone gets a fair shot at a good life.
The average American pays almost 50% in taxes while the rich guys pay about half that amount. Corporations pay even less. Loopholes let some of the wealthiest people get off light, many paying zero taxes on their largest incomes.
WE need politicians who will eave our benefits alone. Tax everybody equally. Close abusive loopholes. Prosecute cheaters and corrupt officials. Those steps will both restore fairness and will reduce the deficit.
By electing actual public servants and holding them accountable to their oaths of office WE can get back to making this country great again, but this time by the slow, messy process of democratic means.
