As a political scientist I have studied and been trained on the government structure of the United States and the separation of powers. We have established the executive, the legislative and the judicial branches. Article 1 establishes Congress, to make the laws. Article 2 establishes the Executive, to see that the laws are carried out. Article 3 defines the judiciary and the Supreme Court to interpret the law and decide disputes.
Some of my colleagues in political science are profound experts on the respective roles of each branch. By contrast I am a casual student of such matters. But I have understood something that most experts get wrong, avoid or forget.
To wit, our Constitution says: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
Thus, experts and commentators who opine that the Supreme Court of the United States has the final and authoritative word on the meaning and effect of the laws are wrong. Even the highest court is subject to the people.
As Donald Trump has yet to learn,
government breaking the law
will make We the People burn.
