The sad reality is that in a country that brands itself as the land of opportunity about 35% of the population would rather have that evil prick for a king than to let others have democracy. I catalog these people as a coalition of 5 types:
1). People who really are oppressed, but so ignorant and dumb they don’t understand that robber barons taking power are going to impoverish and disempower them beyond their wildest fears.
2). Hateful racists and xenophobes who will give up their rights and embrace authoritarianism in order to reject and remove “others” from this country.
3). Ideologues of various kinds including white supremacists, fanatic religionists, neo-confederates, anti-tax activists, gun-rights activists, libertarians, and others.
4). Traditional conservatives who reject the multi-cultural, multi-racial liberal, democratic State, those who think “every person for themselves” will deliver a better life for all.
5). Those who are “in” on it and participate in the takeover of the State apparatus because they imagine (or know) that they will be personally enriched and empowered in an authoritarian oligarchy.
CONCLUSION: None of the above are persuadable. But the entire coalition still constitutes a minority of Americans. True democrats must assert and maintain control of the State apparatus, so carefully designed by our Founders, in order that everyone including the malcontents can live in freedom and in pursuit of a more perfect union.
I have a brother and a friend who support Trump - still. Even though they should know better. It is hard to fully understand how the MAGA sphere works. Partly they don’t believe the reports of suppression and abuse because the permission and excuse spaces are so well defended on media, then partly they don’t think any of it applies to them, then they party or even mostly agree with the regime’s agenda. That’s why I say they are generally not persuadable…
Well stated. I just wrote to a bright creative long time republican friend who still plays tennis at 90 and asked this morning if she was totally satisfied with the results of her vote for Trump.
