There has never been a time when the United States did not face challenges. We always rise to the occasion and we have always set the example for the rest of the world. Today is no different. There are immense challenges underway at home and abroad. But we are not afraid! Rather, we look to the future with optimism, hope and excitement!
Our economy, in spite of the terrible pandemic, is on its way to becoming the best this country has ever seen. The health of our people is improving, and we have plans to create the best healthcare system in the world. Our politics is fraught, as perhaps it has always been, but the Democratic Party is leading the way towards a more civil and more compassionate public discourse.
Overseas there have always been bad actors, unscrupulous ambitious men and autocrats. It is perhaps one of the great missions of democracy in the world and of the United States that we oppose tyrants' forceful taking over of other peoples and other countries. The current troubles in Europe are perhaps a fresh challenge after decades of relative peace, but we should not fear for the long run. Our most longstanding and closest allies have held together, through NATO and in many other ways, to oppose the current tyrant. We believe we can avoid all out war and yet see our values and our democratic credo prevail in the long run in Europe.
At this time in our history, we must be optimistic. We must adhere to, and promote, democratic principles in the world. We must double down in our own country on behalf of free and fair elections, social equity and economic justice. Together with other countries we must husband the natural resources of this planet and reduce the damage that is done by exploitation. We must not forget the terrible impact of global capital on hollowing out our heartland and the pain of our fellow countrymen in all 50 states of our Union.
We must return to a time when people trusted each other, when violence in public discourse was the rude exception, when we could discuss matters of public policy in a sensitive, empathetic and civil manner. The American people are both the most blessed among people on this planet and the shining example for people all around the globe. We must again live up to our aspirations and the mission set for us by our Founders.
