Many folks on the center/left are cynical about politics and politicians.
We are suckers for the argument “they all do it” or for “what about” (Menendez).
Many folks are also frustrated and stymied by the seeming intransigence of Trump supporters. Seemingly they won’t listen to sensible arguments, don’t believe the mainstream news about Trump’s crimes, and believe all manner of untrue things about Democrats. It seems hardly worth it to try to talk to them at all.
But two things might change your mind about talking to Republicans:
1) Trump supporters are not wood, they have thoughts and feelings like anyone and they might like some things about Trump and other things not so much, and
2) Trump supporters are not all “true believers”. In many cases former Trump voters voted in protest, because they didn’t like Hillary, or because Bernie was not on the ballot. Others voted for Trump just to register their unhappiness.
In the first case, you should talk to Republicans, because making a strong case and setting an example WILL influence people. They may not change their minds but presenting the truth may make them less vocal, meaning they won’t influence their own family and friends as much. Also, exposure to the facts may increase the doubts they already have about Trump and Trump-ism. If you give a good, sensible talk, former Trump supporters might just stay home on Election Day, or even decide to vote Democrat. Also, by you speaking up in public, other reasonable people in the conversation may be encouraged and reinforced. Best of all, by giving witness you’ll experience “confirmation” in your own beliefs.
In the second case, knowing that many former Trump voters are already turned off, and that many have already decided not to vote for TFG again, and others are on the fence about what to do. Point out they are likely wasting their vote if they vote for a 3rd party. It is important to INVITE people to consider the risks of a vote for either Trump or a 3rd party. It’s important to discuss the issues in a way that doesn’t alienate folks.
Instead of of confrontation, Democrats can show their concern over and rejection of putting a criminal in the top job. Democrats can point out key policy directions that the Biden administration will pursue. Democrats can ask questions instead of preaching. We need to make friends and influence people.
Everyone believes this coming election will be a close one. Trust me, only a few percent of people nationwide leaving the Republican coalition will make all the difference and help Democrats win the election!
What's Wrong with America is Americans. Trump knows this fact so he benefits from our damaged bodies. 65% of us are obese. His voters love that he is too. Love his 41 inch waistline. Politicians regardless of what side they cling to are unable to recognize our pathetic population and how China is laughing.
