Trumpism is driven by misogyny - but we need to realize the roles of racism and xenophobia in this neofascist movement. Those themes, together with anti-tax, anti-regulation activists, add up to some 40% of the population and/or 50% of voters. It was enough to elect Trump.
Trump’s policies are intended to remove the obstacles to rich people and corporations doing whatever they want. What they want is to reverse 80 years of American leadership. While not perfect, America has worked on climate protection, consumer protection, and seeking peace through international treaty organizations that resisted the scope of dictators and anti-Western States such as Iran, China, Hungary and others.
Reversing, or even reducing, American leadership on these issues will leave the whole world worse off. War has returned to Europe and will accelerate. Climate destruction will increase and probably become irreversible. Opponents of democracy will have a freer hand. Exploitation of workers, worldwide, will increase while here in the US we’ll see increased poverty and unemployment. Those outcomes won’t be accidental- it’s what powerful interests actually want.
So yeah, Trump won and the Democrats lost. Normal politics of losing an election would dictate the losing party working to peel off elements of Trump’s perverse coalition. It’s hard to see which of those elements would be amenable to supporting Democrats!
However, there is another group making up the neofascist coalition for Trump. These are those who have suffered economically under the increasing power and influence of the moneyed class.
Trump is working in favor of billionaires, oligarchs and large corporate interests. The Trump movement is held together by their success in appealing to a diverse coalition of malcontents. Many of these disgruntled people have real reasons to be upset, even if they blame the wrong forces for their misery.
Democrats already enjoy support from at least half of American voters. To build a winning coalition, Democrats need to realize that appealing to the most vulnerable people in America, workers, organized labor and small businesses with a powerful, trend-breaking economic plan is their way back to power. That is how they get control of the Congress in two years. That’s how we elect a President in 2028. That’s how we salvage 80 years of American leadership and progress towards peace and prosperity.
I guess I am struggling to get the 80 years of progress--8 years of Reagan which led to thousands of factories closing, 12 years of the Bush family with bombing Irag possibly being the worst thing this country has ever done resulting in a million deaths of mostly innocent people, and now a second term of Trump. I agree totally with the need for the Democratic Partly to go back to the left and help the working class and most vulnerable: the neoliberqls don't seem to care about the bottom half of this country. I saw someone on youtube showing that Nancy Pelosi has now 263 Billion dollars--she obviously will not be on board with what you suggest.
I sure hope you are right!
